On January 4, wrestling fans are reminded of some of the most electrifying moments in history that unfolded on this date. One of the most notable events took place in 1999 at the Tokyo Dome, where New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) held its annual January 4th show, which later became known as Wrestle Kingdom. This event has since become NJPW’s flagship show, akin to WrestleMania in the United States. The 1999 edition featured a memorable bout between Keiji Mutoh and Scott Norton, with Mutoh’s technical prowess clashing against Norton’s raw power, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Fast forward to 2010, the wrestling world saw the debut of Hulk Hogan in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). This marked a significant moment in wrestling history as Hogan, a legend and a major figure in WWE’s success during the 80s and 90s, brought his star power to TNA. His arrival was part of a broader attempt to elevate the company to new heights, sparking storylines and feuds that captivated audiences.

January 4 is also remembered for the intense rivalry between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada, culminating in a legendary match at Wrestle Kingdom 11 in 2017. This bout is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time, earning a six-star rating from wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer. The encounter showcased both wrestlers’ incredible athleticism and storytelling ability, solidifying their legacies and setting a new standard for excellence in the industry.

A fun fact about January 4 in wrestling history is that it marks the anniversary of the infamous “Fingerpoke of Doom” incident in 1999. During an episode of WCW Monday Nitro, Kevin Nash, who was the WCW World Heavyweight Champion at the time, faced Hulk Hogan. In a shocking turn of events, Hogan merely poked Nash in the chest, leading to Nash’s immediate collapse and a quick pinfall victory for Hogan. This moment is often cited as a pivotal point in WCW’s decline, illustrating the unpredictable and often controversial nature of professional wrestling storytelling.
